Oak Park High School’s ComedySportz team held a game specifically for its newest members on Jan. 20 in the Pavilion. The name of the game is to outwit your opponents and do well by the audience’s proposals. This dynamic helped create a competitive atmosphere for members, alongside lively performances.

Freshman ‘newbie’ Livi Gaeta considered the night a success, in keeping with the rest of the ComedySportz season.

“I think it went really well,” Gaeta said. “I mean there were just a lot of laughs. It was packed out there, the energy was high and I think it was an overall really good game.”

Using the audience’s recommendations, the game’s main focus was on making the viewers laugh.

“All of our suggestions come from the audience,” senior Jared Cornick, the ComedySportz manager, said. “They determine which teams’ games are funnier, as their laughs [and] votes determine who wins that match.”

The newbies have been preparing for this game since they joined the team at the beginning of the school year.

“We had workshops in late August and early September with tryouts the following week, so it’s been almost six months now,” Cornick said. “We’ve been prepping them by doing practice games, teaching them stage presence, how to develop relationships in characters and objectives.”

ComedySportz games are open for anyone to attend. Their next game is on Feb. 10.

“It’s just a great, fun time and I can guarantee you, you’ll laugh at least once or twice,” Cornick said.
