With millions of teens streaming music on Spotify every day, it’s no surprise that the most-played songs are those that are currently trending on social media. But are these songs really worth being at the top? What truly makes these the top most-played Spotify songs of all of the USA?
- “That’s So True” – Gracie Abrams
Ever since her debut in 2019, Gracie Abrams has quickly become one of the most relatable artists of her generation. Featured in her newest album, “The Secret of Us (Deluxe),” “That’s So True” has the perfect combination of raw emotion and upbeat music. You can truly feel the pain in Abrams’ voice when she sings about struggling to move on from an ex who has already moved forward. The music is portrayed in a way that is relatable to others, compelling them to want to listen. Even if the listener can’t relate to the specific experiences that Abrams’ is singing about, the catchy beat and emotional sound are just as enjoyable! If you haven’t already, this is a song to listen to.
- “Die With A Smile” – Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars
“Die With A Smile” quickly became popular after being released towards the beginning of the school year. The song tells the story of two people who are in love spending their final moments alive together. It portrays a deep message: to cherish every moment because you never know when that could be taken away from you. The collaboration between Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars is nothing short of magical. Their harmonies flow beautifully together, creating an angelic sound to the song. If you’re a hopeless romantic, this is the perfect song for you.
- “Sticky” – Tyler the Creator
With the release of his new album “CHROMAKOPIA” this fall, Tyler the Creator has already had over 100 million listens to the song “Sticky.” While I’m usually a Tyler fan, this song is definitely not one of his best. It has no plot, no beat and there is no deeper meaning behind the song. It just keeps repeating the same lyric, “It’s gettin’ sticky.” This song lacks the depth and thoughtfulness that Tyler usually brings. Furthermore, his collab with Sexyy Red and Lil Wayne had potential, but ultimately the song left me wishing there was more to it. Not every song can be a hit, and this one certainly did not meet my expectations.
- “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” – Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish remains one of the biggest stars to emerge in this century, with a total of 9 Grammy Awards. Her newest album, “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT” features a wide variety of songs, including “BIRDS OF A FEATHER.” This song represents friendship and how we would be nothing without our friends. It is extremely relatable to anyone, but especially teens, and has a very powerful message to it. According to Eilish, the song barely made the cut in her latest album.
“We overthought this sort of simple song so hard,” Eilish’s brother and producer, known as FINNEAS, said in the album’s behind-the-scenes video. “We kept getting lost in the maze on this song.”
Whatever the reason, I’m glad that this song was included in the album, and I think if you listen to it you will be too.
- Sailor Song – Gigi Perez
With over 335 million streams on Spotify, “Sailor Song” has quickly emerged as one of the most listened-to songs in the USA. Behind its soft sound, the meaning of this song is deeper than what it may seem. The metaphor of loving someone like a sailor inspired the song. Sailors are at sea for most of their lives, yet they always hope to come home to the same partner. Perez is hopeful of a relationship similar to this. Whether you are staring at the ceiling late at night contemplating life, or just need a good song to cry to, this song creates all the feels.
While these songs are among the most-streamed songs on Spotify, their emotional impact makes them worth the listen. Although not all of these songs deserve to be at the top, there is a reason why they are a favorite for many. Give these songs a listen to decide for yourself whether or not you think they live up to the hype.
