The Oak Park Girls’ varsity volleyball team has remained undefeated in league this season, with a 8-0 record.

Seniors Allyson Hawkins and Lauren Herrera are varsity team captains and commits. They have both reached high numbers on their kills and assists.

Hawkins is a 5 ft 7 inch outside hitter committed to Bowdoin College. She has surpassed 500 kills and continues to add to her statistics.

“I wasn’t really focused on the stats and reaching that goal. I actually found out from another person that I was getting close to it,” Hawkins wrote to the Talon. “I know I’ve passed it since then and at this point I’m just looking to see how far I can get to end this season.”

Herrera a 5 ft 10 inch setter committed to play for Franklin Pierce University. Recently she surpassed 1000 hits for the Eagles. Although Herrera said this was not a goal of hers, she said she takes pride in it.

“It was definitely an achievement that I am proud of and something that reflects the entire team’s success. Every assist started with a pass and ended with a kill, so these 1,000 assists were 100 percent a group effort,” Herrera wrote to the Talon.

Both girls agreed their main goal this year is one for the team: ending their league season in an 8-0 record, ending for the second year in a row as league champions.

“The team has been working insanely hard in sixth period, lm and even training before sunrise. Everything we have been doing has been an effort towards ending 8-0 again this year,” Herrera wrote.

Hawkins said she hopes the team will “go out with a bang” and continue their progress deeper into the CIF playoffs.

“I want to be the best teammate I can be and push each and every one of my teammates to their fullest potential,” Hawkins wrote. “Knowing that I’m a senior and this is my last year I want to be remembered as being a great teammate and a fun person to play with.”

The team’s first CIF game will be Oct, 31 at Oak Park High School.
