New science teacher arrives at Oak Park High School

Allison Kerr pursues her teaching career

Allison Kerr is a new teacher at Oak Park High School, teaching FOS Earth and Physics and Anatomy and Physiology.

Kerr taught at Westlake High School for three years before coming to OPHS. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Cal Lutheran University and received a master’s degree in education from DePaul University.

Prior to her teaching career, Kerr worked with animals at Living Exhibits, a marine life company, providing animals to the St. Louis Zoo and Gulf World Marine Park in Panama City Beach, Florida.

“When I first graduated from college, I wanted to go focus on animal husbandry and conservation,” Kerr said. According to Kerr, “Animal husbandry consists of the care and breeding of animals, and within the context of zoos and aquariums, includes exotic animals and conservation.”

Still pursuing her passion of science, Kerr chose to change her career.

“I decided I wanted to be a teacher because teaching is never monotonous or boring, for better or for worse,” Kerr said. “I really just loved biology and physiology, and I wanted to share that passion with other students who wanted to learn about it.”

Kerr said she enjoys teaching high school students for multiple reasons.

“I think high schoolers are so much more fun than elementary kids,” Kerr said. “High school kids are more mature, they can learn at a more in-depth knowledge of science. You can joke around with them more and have a relationship with them.”

Senior Julia Broms said she enjoys Kerr’s Anatomy and Physiology class.

“I really like Ms. Kerr’s class. I feel like I’m learning a lot, and she maintains a fun learning environment,” Broms said.

Outside of school, Kerr likes to hike, run marathons, go to the beach and participate in triathlons.

“Anything that gets me outside and in nature, I am for down for it,” Kerr said.

After hearing good things about the students, administration and teachers, Kerr decided to come to OPHS.

“I’m really happy to be here. It really is such a great community and culture to be in,” Kerr said.
