Agoura voted into league, resists change

Agoura Chargers to join the Coastal Canyon League

August 30, 2017

The CIF school board announced that Agoura High School may be joining the Coastal Canyon athletic league for the upcoming 2017-18 school year.

The schools currently in the Coastal Canyon league voted to include Agoura, but Agoura filed an appeal to remain in its current sports league. A council will address the appeal Oct. 3 and will release the final decision afterward.

“CIF governs which high school sports do re-leaguing every four years, and it was through this re-leaguing process that [the schools currently in Oak Park’s league] voted to make this league, and they included Agoura this time with us,” Co-Athletic Director Ann Pettit said.

According to Pettit, Oak Park did not decide to include Agoura in the league. Rather, the other high schools currently in the league — Moorpark, Camarillo, Royal and Simi — voted to include Agoura.

“Right now [Agoura is] not necessarily in favor of wanting to be in our league, and they have appealed it. It got turned down by an executive committee, but they can go to the whole council, for another larger vote,” Pettit said.

According to Co-Athletic Director Dick Billingsley, there would be many benefits to Agoura’s addition to the league.

“We think that it will be a good thing,” Billingsley said. “We play [Agoura] in a lot of sports anyways, non-league, and now they would just be in our league. So we are in favor of [adding Agoura to our league].”
