Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Sept. 15 and continues through Oct. 15. This month honors the culture, history and independence day of American citizens with Hispanic ancestry. Thousand Oaks is hosting some events for those celebrating this annual tradition, or who are curious to learn more about the history of many Latin American countries.
Learn how to paint like Frida Kahlo on Thursday, Sept. 21, from 4 to 5 p.m, at the Westlake Village Library. Kahlo was a Mexican artist, feminist and activist in the 1900’s. She was most famous for her vibrantly pigmented still-lifes, nature scenes and self-portraits. This in-person and free event is intended for 13 to 17 year old attendees. It is meant to stimulate their artistic sides while cultivating their knowledge on Hispanic culture.
In addition, attendees will be able to view various examples of amate folk art and create one themselves. Amate folk art acts as a historical record that depicts everyday life for various indigenous tribes of Mexico. This event takes place at the Westlake Village Library on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m to 12 p.m, for adults 18 years old and over.
Lastly, the festivities will be concluded with “Lotería”, a traditional Spanish game of chance. Attendees can cultivate their Spanish tongue, learn new facts about the game and win prizes. The program will take place at the Agoura Hills Library on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 3 to 4 p.m. The event is intended for children, ages 5 to 12 with their parent or guardian. To register, click here.
