The Alliance of Youth Leaders Club at Oak Park High School provides students with the opportunity to get involved in public service in their local communities.
Prior to this year, the newly formed club was strictly an out-of-school organization.
“We already existed as a volunteering organization for two years before the club formed,” Jason Xie, the AYLUS club President and founder of the San Fernando branch, said.
When Xie started the San Fernando branch, he recalls he was with friends having fun.
“We started sometime during the pandemic I believe, just did monthly events wherever we could,” Xie said. “I think one of the best parts is that when you’re volunteering, you’re doing so with friends so we end up having a good time and making fun out of events.”
As this is the first year the organization is a school club, the amount of recognition it is getting is growing.
“Establishing the school charter has only expanded the awareness and just the amount of people who know about us,” said Xie.
AYLUS has committed to making a positive impact on the community around them.
“We do trash clean-ups, senior living care, food drives, book drives and more,” AYLUS secretary Aaron Hekmatjah said.“[The] experience has been real and inspirational.”
AYLUS welcomes anyone who is interested in helping the community, one activity at a time.
“[Being a part of the club is] very fulfilling for the heart,” Vice President of the AYLUS club, Ben Kozikaro said.
