Entering a new district can be stressful and overwhelming, especially when students are still getting to know their peers. With this in mind, the Advanced Peer Counseling program at Oak Park High School aimed to minimize those feelings through a lunchtime event in the Pavilion, APC’s New Student Welcome.
On Friday, Sept. 6, students were given a chance to further acclimate to OPHS and form new friendships. For some, it is a big adjustment from their previous school.
“It was overwhelming at first, but then I met all of my friends and it got really fun,” freshman Ellie Rodriguaz said. “It’s so much less chaotic [than my middle school].”
Participants not only tied the knot on their bracelets but on new connections as well. Advanced Peer Counselors collaborated with them on talking to others and putting their bracelets together.
“I know it takes a lot of courage to come out here being a new student, and I just think that’s really awesome that so many people are taking advantage of this great opportunity,” senior Advanced Peer Counselor Emma Coulter said.
Coulter also believes that there are many things established students can do around campus to make them feel more welcome. A simple “hello” can truly make all the difference to someone who needs it.
“Definitely keep an eye out for [new students], because I feel like we tend to overlook new students and hang out with our friends,” Coulter said. “So really just keeping an open mind…and branching out.”
