“My walk-out song? ‘Bye Bye Bye,’ *NSYNC.”
Senior Ish Dubey values the energy of the beloved Y2K boy band’s most listened-to song on Spotify. Yes, he acknowledges, the song is currently popular, but that doesn’t diminish its greatness to him. However, the guitar player also prides himself on his “day one” fanhood of Noah Kahan.
Of course, Dubey is more than the music he jams out to, but he still defines himself simply.
“I am seventeen, but as for who I am: I’m 6 foot 4 inches on tippy toes. I love playing music on my guitar. I’m an aspiring aerospace engineer. I love hands-on problem-solving,” Dubey said.
Dubey also spends his time leaning into this interest. Despite being a hands-on problem solver, he’s taken AP Physics so that he can understand the laws that govern the world.
“Without knowing what forces are, I would not be seeing the world with the filter I do today,” Dubey said.
Dubey’s interests melt into passion and play for him. He doesn’t mind spending hours outside of classes working with applications of physics. His favorite memories of this summer are of his job at an airport as an aviation mechanic.
“I was just trying to get hands-on experience for my field choice. And seeing planes that had crashed, fixing them and then seeing them fly almost good as new; that’s just amazing to me,” Dubey remembered fondly.
Dubey hopes that all of this time spent on physics leads him back to planes. His plans for the future include anything to do with planes, including being a pilot or designing planes.
“How do we as humans figure out how to fly? That’s almost divine,” Dubey explained.
Dubey takes breaks from the world of physics and flight by watching comedic TV shows and spending time with his family, which includes his parents and sister who lives in San Francisco.
“Anytime I’m outside of my room I’m interacting with them; we go on walks together, we watch TV together, laughing, eating food,” Dubey said. “I’ve been trying to convince my mom to let us add a dog to the fun, but that probably isn’t going to happen.”
Dubey also enjoys spending time with his friends. He recalls his most memorable Halloween in sophomore year, the year his costume was a toga.
“It was a few days after the Julius Caesar presentation. I was with my friends at the Deerhill communities, and we just got a bunch of candy,” Dubey laughed. “I liked that costume; very original.”
And Halloween memories aren’t the only thing Dubey likes about autumn, his favorite season. He appreciates the cozy cold of October days, ones where he has to wear a jacket to school but eventually ends up carrying around once the day becomes blazing hot. The bright orange tint of fall foliage reminds Dubey of what he has to be proud of.
“I am proud of how I am with people,” Dubey admitted. “I really like people, I really like supporting people, I really like talking to people. I love having the ability to be there for them is something unmatched, and I love having fun with them.”
And Dubey hopes that sentiment is shared by the people he interacts with. When asked what he wants people to know about him, above all the songs, extra-curriculars, or his favorite ice cream flavor (cookies and cream), he stressed the simplicity of his character.
“I want people to know that I’m kind. I want them to remember me as a kind individual and someone that’s willing to listen and to converse with other people to get to know more about them. I’m a people person. I’m more than just what you see at the surface.”
