OPHS just concluded their annual Club Week in the pavilion. From Sept. 9-13, clubs of all shapes and sizes were welcome to advertise themselves through posters and sign-up sheets. Within the rows of tables there were clubs that had been passed down through generations, as well as clubs that have just been started this year.
Sophomore Makenzie Sustin wrote to the Talon, “As a new club this year I am super excited for serving our community and working with others… to make Oak Park a better place.”
Clubs serve as an incredible way to find people with similar hobbies and improve your skills. From the chess club to the various drawing clubs, participants have the chance to immerse themselves in their interests alongside people who are equally as passionate. One example of these safe spaces is Veritas, the creative writing club on campus.
“[Veritas] is a place for students to not only experiment with the creative writing process, but experiment with having a creative writing community,” Veritas adviser Jessica Wall-Smith said.
On top of interaction with their peers, many clubs give students the opportunity to help out the community through volunteer work. Freshman Seeds of Service president Kailey Hand aspires to serve her area through gardening service activities.
I really care about the environment and helping out the community,”Hand said.
Now that the week has drawn to a close, clubs will begin meeting with their members to start the year off strong.
“I’m looking forward to going to the meetings and seeing who else shared my same interests,” junior Film Club member Max Fybel wrote to the Talon.
