Oak Park High School’s Music at the Movies choir concert on Sept. 25 left students, parents and even staff mesmerized by the vocal arrangements and well-coordinated pieces. For many, it was an impressive exhibition of talent and dedication from over 50 combined choir members. Each song was performed with an excerpt of a movie. For example, “The Circle of Life” was presented with the opening scene of “The Lion King.”
The process of mastering each piece requires not only time but also adaptability from the students. OPHS’ accomplished choir and strings teacher Stacy McClamma and band teacher Zachary Borquez led the way during the performances conducting and managing the entire operation.
“Some of the pieces we’ve been practicing for a month or two, while others have only been worked on for a few weeks,” McClamma said. “We learned them at different stages.”
A lot of the talent shown in OPHS’ choir group comes from the adaptability and the resilience to achieve under pressure. With only a short amount of time to learn each piece and song before the performance, these groups show grit and perseverance throughout the concert.
“They’ve really had to become quick learners,” McClamma said.
Many of the choir students were pleasantly surprised by the quality of what was produced in such a short time.
“I thought we all did a great job,” sophomore Jasleen Sumal said. “I think we all love going up there on stage and just having some fun.”
The night’s success was not only in the harmonies but also in the dedication and passion of the students. Their teamwork and talent left a lasting impression, setting a high bar for future performances.
“I think it went incredibly well. I think it came together just as we pictured and the preparation paid off,” sophomore Cameron Mcneilly said.
