Post-game soccer parties, group hangouts, family reunions – this is what Lamppost meant to the community. A month ago, the beloved Lamppost Pizza in Westlake announced its closing.
Lamppost was opened in 1991 and has played a big role in the Oak Park community. At the announcement of its closing, many community members have been wondering why.
Judy Hodgson, the owner of Lamppost, explains that a break is very necessary after many years.
“The last ten years have been challenging for Lamppost and myself,” Hodgson said. “I am getting older and have been working countless hours.”
She expresses that although it came as a surprise to most, it was a really thought-through and difficult choice that she made for the better.
“I know it seemed to the community that it was a sudden decision, but it was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make to close my doors for good,” Hodgson said. “With the stress of losing money every month and the plumbing problems along with most of the equipment being 33 years old and breaking down every other day, I decided it was time.”
Hodgson shares her gratitude for the Oak Park community and the love that was shared through every slice.
“It’s been a wonderful experience living here, being part of this amazing community and sharing my life and Lamppost with everyone,” Hodgson said. “I have appreciated all of your families supporting my small business for so many years.”
Lamppost was more than just a restaurant, it was a place of comfort, a hangout spot and a place to make long-lasting memories at. Even though Lamppost has closed, the community won’t ever forget Lamppost and all it has done for us.
Sophomore Genevieve Gannam enjoyed Lamppost when it was around and is sad to see it close.
“I played sports when I was younger and we would have team parties there which I’m really going to miss,” Gannam said. “Lamppost was such a great place and I remember going all the time for team things, for family things, and I always had the best time there. I am really sad that it’s closed and they had the best pizza there.”
