The Sent With Love club targets elder groups who live in retirement homes to make them feel more appreciated.
“Our mission is to promote positivity and mental health in elderly assisted living facilities,” junior club President Sophia Thurman said. “It can be hard for elderly people to be optimistic in these settings where they don’t see their family or friends a lot.”
Oak Park High School students come together through hands-on activities to create assurance for the elderly.
“Every meeting we write positive cards with kind messages and colorful art to help [their] mindset,” Thurman said. “Every member makes at least two cards and we’ve made 100 cards so far.”
Sent With Love has already made a remarkable impact, and they plan on continuing to do so.
“We’re going to hand out cards to facilitated living for the elderly and fundraisers at the end of the semester or next semester,” Thurman said.
Typically, clubs on campus will do activities out of school to gain awareness and to help their mission.
“We want to write something nice for them,” junior club Vice President Sophia Lara said. “Just knowing that we can make someone’s day better is really our goal.”
With 1 in 5 of older adults experiencing mental health concerns, the Sent with Love club is driven to spend time to provide assistance for these individuals.
