It is in the mind of almost every Oak Park High School student to think about their future careers. If interested in a STEM field, the seemingly limitless career opportunities can feel overwhelming. Sophomore Madeline Ng, is attempting to ease this problem through her club, Careers in Science.
“Our club is to engage students and allow them to figure out what career they want to pursue after school,” Ng said.
As the name suggests, Careers in Science, encourages students looking to pursue jobs in the medical profession.
“We narrowed it down specifically to the medical field,” said Ng. “We gathered guest speakers from everywhere in the medical field. We zoom with them or they come here. They tell us about what they do, how they achieved their goals, what college they went to. If it was hard, worth it?”
Before the creation of the club, Ng had many questions about the medical field despite her personal connection to it.
“I am not quite sure what I want to do and I am somewhat struggling in figuring out where I want to be,” Ng said. “I come from a family with doctors and nurses. I feel like I have a connection and it has sparked a passion in me. It has made me want to pursue a career in medicine.”
In the end, Ng hopes that students will be able to take important information from her meetings. The club meets on the first Wednesday of the month in F-05, Mrs. Heinrich’s room. She wants them to be able to use the information from these meetings in real life situations.
“I hope students will be able to figure out what they want to do,” Ng said. “There are so many careers out there in the medical world and there are so many types of doctors and nurses. Do you want to work with children, adults and the elderly? We just want to help students find a specific category in what they want to pursue that they are really passionate about.”
