With a great record last year, Oak Park High School girls lacrosse is going into their season ready to do well again. After losing good players due to graduation and transfers, the girls have new and returning players on the field this year.
“We lost a lot of players and our good players, so that has definitely changed,” sophomore Sophie Kieling said. “We have also got a lot of new players.”
With some players fully new to the sport, this season will give the new athletes a taste of lacrosse.
“This season I am most excited to see the newer players build their skills and experience all the joys that lacrosse has to offer,” senior captain Brooke Norton said.
Since the girls are close on and off of the field, Kieling looks forward to doing Secret Sisters with her team. Each person is given another teammate as their Secret Sister for the season.
“Secret Sister is when we get our secret sister gifts or food for away games for the bus,” Kieling said.
Secret Sister helps the team build bonds with each other. Along with that, the team has developed new friendships.
“This year’s team dynamic is great. There are a lot of new players and underclassmen, which has made for new friendships and team bonding,” Norton said.
Last season, the girls went 14-3 overall and 10-2 in their league games. So far this year, they have played in three games and won two out of the three.
“I think we will do pretty good,” Kieling said. “[But] I don’t think we will do as good as last season.”
Compared to their standings last year, the girls still have high expectations.
“I think this season will be a challenge as we lost some talent,” Norton said. “But overall, I think the team will see more wins than losses.”
