On Saturday, Feb. 22, Oak Park High School ComedySportz hosted a crossover game with Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy to raise funds for the California Fire Foundation. The foundation provides resources to firefighters and their families financially–with donations and scholarships–as well as emotionally with the California Firefighters Benevolent Fund.
ComedySportz’s usual charity game is in March; however, in light of the recent fires, they wanted to dedicate the Saturday game to people impacted by the fires. The ComedySportz team decided to contribute to the CFF by having an anonymous vote to determine which charity they would support.
“In the end, the CA Fire Foundation was the charity with the most votes,” OPHS ComedySportz captain Madi Pelc wrote to the Talon. “The entire team is incredibly grateful for all the firefighters who came far and wide to help California, and we wanted to give back to them in any way we could.”
Crossover games are hard to plan, especially in a smaller league like the high school Comedy Sportz one. However, when OPHS and FSHA collaborated on this game, their spark was undeniable.
“Their arrival is a core memory for me,” Pelc wrote. “Our entire 20-something person team all stood outside excitedly waiting for them to come, and when they stepped out of the car, everyone was so inviting and hospitable.”
