If one merely glanced at the Oak Park High School theater production, they would risk missing all the rich, vibrant and exciting energy the class has to offer. For many members, OPHS theater has become a second home for them.
“The kids do a lot of the work, and they are very invested,” Theater Director and teacher Ellyn Schneider said. “This particular production ‘The Outsiders’ is our student spotlight production which is produced and directed by the students. We have spotlight in spring and 24 hour play in the fall and those two are completely student run. The fall play and spring musical are not student run but the students do play a huge role in all areas of design, leadership and collaboration.”
Everything from painting sets, planning scenes and practicing is time-consuming, yet a rewarding endeavor.
“We build a lot and paint a lot,” sophomore Kylie Vo, set lead in the production, said. “I also do tech and sound. My favorite part is working with everyone and with my friends. It’s a great family environment.”
This time of the year is bittersweet for many seniors, as it will be their last high school play. However, that only incentivizes them to make the best of it and put on a spectacular performance.
“I’m really happy I joined because I met my second family here,” senior and play director Abby Schuh said.
