Oak Park High School hosted Back to School Night on Thursday, Aug. 28. Back to School Night is an opportunity for families to connect with their child’s teachers and mentors.
The event attracts more freshmen and sophomore parents, who are curious about the rhythms of the school day.
“It’s always nice for parents to hear directly from teachers what’s done in class instead of hearing it from their children,” Principal Mat McClenehan said. “However, it is understandable that the night calls out to freshman and sophomore parents who are newer to the High School and how we operate.”
Ample staff and volunteers kept the night running smoothly, with OPHS PFA hosting a staff dinner and ASB students assisting families in navigating the campus. Freshman Avery Calima, who joined ASB this year, enjoyed working the event.
“I help guide parents to the correct classes if they have any trouble or questions in general,” Calima said. “We even have an ongoing bake sale during the night if you want to stop for a snack.”
ASB adviser Anastasia Kokiousis balanced hosting the night while teaching her Fundamentals of Science class to families.
“The night was excellent,” Kokiousis said. “It was so nice to see the parents of my students and help explain how the classes work. It’s a very fast night for [staff members] with only ten minute intervals of speaking time.” Kokiousis said.
In just a few hours, Back to School Night captured OPHS’ spirit: fast paced, engaging and student centered.
