As an active part of the theater community, senior Max Fybel has trained in the dramatic arts throughout her childhood. Her love for theater has stemmed from consistently participating in and watching musicals.

“I’ve been doing musical theater on and off since the age of five, and I just fell in love with it,” Fybel said. “I did a couple summer programs for musical theater, and it solidified to me [that], wow, I want to do this for my life.”

Although Fybel didn’t acquire the roles she originally auditioned for, she realized after portraying her character the role she received was worthwhile.

“I initially auditioned for Alfred and Queen of Hearts, but with such a small cast, it was hard for me to find characters to audition for. But, I’m super happy with my part, and my friends have been doing amazing jobs with those roles.”

For a theater performer, one of the most challenging parts of acting is becoming a character you’ve never familiarized yourself with. Although Fybel does not specifically relate to her character, she enjoys the challenge of being able to step outside her comfort zone.

“I’m definitely not like my character in that sense,” Fybel said. “It’s definitely a challenge to get in that mindset, but it’s been fun.”

Additionally, Fybel expresses her excitement to be performing on a completely new stage.

“Our stage is built completely differently than how it normally is, so we have an upper part and lower part. The upper part signifies the real world and the lower part signifies Wonderland,” Fybel said. “It’s cool to show the progression of the story and what happens in the real world versus Wonderland.”
