Friday: Awareness Week ends and ‘El Chapo’ extradited to U.S.
This week: Awareness Week
Boys’ varsity basketball played a home game against Camarillo Wednesday, Jan. 18, winning with a score of 59-58. Frosh-soph, however, lost in their home game against Camarillo, 54-63.
Girls’ varsity basketball lost in their away game against Camarillo by a score of 28-68 Wednesday, Jan. 18. They have another away game against Notre Dame today, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. That same day, junior varsity will also play away against Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m.
Boys’ varsity soccer lost against Camarillo 0-1, while frosh-soph won 2-1 against the same school. Both games were held at home Wednesday, Jan. 18.
Awareness Week was hosted by Advanced Peer Counseling this week.
- Guest speaker Judy Shepard spoke at a school-wide assembly Tuesday, Jan. 17; that same day, English teacher Alex Allison delivered a presentation on her experience in Iraq during seventh period.
- The Gay-Straight Alliance Club had a lunch event Wednesday, Jan. 18, followed by a “Diversity and Life Across Borders” presentation during seventh period.
- Thursday featured a religion panel at lunch as well as a slam poetry and art showcase event at 4:30 p.m. in the Pavilion.
- Lastly, there will be an Ability Awareness Fair during lunch on the Great Lawn Friday, Jan. 20, accompanied by the Anti-Defamation League’s “No Place For Hate” presentation at seventh period in G-9. Additionally, the winners to Awareness Week’s art and writing contest will be announced and awarded prizes.

Beyond Oak Park: ‘El Chapo’ extradited to U.S.
Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman Loera, known more prominently as “El Chapo,” was extradited to the United States yesterday, Jan. 19. The extradition was a sudden occurrence, as it came after nearly a year of appeals and legal procedures. Since then, Loera has been transferred to American authorities in New York, where he faces charges for his part as chieftain in the Sinaloa drug cartel. Read more from the New York Times.
