American Sign Language Honors Society announced its newest members during the Friday Connect period on March 5. This is a national honors society that recognizes students who excel in ASL and encourages students to explore new aspects of ASL by competing in ASL storytelling and activities, completing community service and connecting to the deaf community in various ways.

Senior Madison Kirby is an ASL student who heard about the application from her teacher, Deanne Bray. She sent in an application and received an email a few weeks later that she had become part of the society.

“I love ASL and I’m truly proud to be a part of it. It’s an honor getting to be involved in a language that is so beautiful and connecting,” Kirby wrote to the Talon. “I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge and sharing my experiences.”

Before taking ASL Kirby said she knew very little about Deaf culture but is appreciative of Oak Park High Schools’ various educational programs including the class and the club which teach and raise awareness about ASL.

“I think anyone who wants to learn a language should take the opportunity to sign up for our amazing ASL classes on campus for next year,” Kirby wrote. “This class truly has taught me the most amazing things, and Mrs. Bray is an extraordinary teacher! You will love the class and fall in love with the language.”

The induction ceremony for the new members will be held on April 21, 2021, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and will be live-streamed for all to watch. There will be a deaf keynote speaker as well as interpreters.

“I am so excited for the ceremony, especially because I watched keynote speaker, Wawa’s (Warren Snipe) performance of the national anthem in ASL at the Super Bowl this year,” Kirby wrote. “His performance moved and captivated me, and I’m so looking forward to meeting such an influential figure!”
