Burnt eggs set off third fire alarm in two weeks
Three alarms. Two weeks. One cause. Around 9:30 a.m. today, the fire alarm sounded, again. It was set off when the cafeteria staff was preparing breakfast eggs for the schools in the district. On Tuesday, the evacuation of school grounds ate up almost 45 minutes of instruction, leaving numerous teachers disappointed and many students scrambling to catch up to what they’ve missed. Luckily, unlike last time, the “all clear” to return to class was given moments after the alarm sounded to prevent further disruption.
“Last year we had a total of two fire alarms but this year we’ve had three in the first weeks” Principal Kevin Buchanan said.
These fire alarms are due to the new system that the cafeteria staff is implementing this year. The cafeteria is cooking all food from scratch. However, the staff is still getting acclimated to the setup and has encountered some minor issues.
“They burned something this morning. They were cooking something and didn’t have the extractor fans on because they didn’t know where the switch was. It set off the fire alarms” Buchanan said. “The fire department came and they did an assessment of our kitchen. They will come out and give us some help with our fire alarms.”
Precautionary measures are being taken to avoid these types of incidents from happening again such as, moving the alarms and informing the staff of cafeteria procedures.
