After the past year and a summer of training, Oak Park High School’s girls cross country team competed in their first race of the season.
Varsity senior runner Katerina Modrzejewski placed 27 out of 190 racers.
“I had a lot of nerves going up, I was worried about how I would do,” Modrzejewski said. “Once the race started it was hard to get into it, but I started to catch up to people. It was a good race to get over with.”
Varsity sophomore runner Sophia Perez came right behind Modrzejewski placing 28th. In just one year, Perez beat her personal record by five minutes on the same course.
“I am really proud of myself, I wouldn’t be able to do it without my teammate, Tabitha, who got me out into the race,” Perez said. “I had a strong second half and passed 26 people, I definitely exceeded my expectations.”
Overall, the team performed well with many runners beating their personal records and accomplishing their goals.
