The average basketball team has 12 players. However, Oak Park High School’s girls basketball team only has six this season.
The varsity team started with eight players, but after two girls left the team, only six remained. The team brought up another girl to give the team seven players.
“Coach Will brought up a freshman named Natasha from JV to come play with us, and she’s been playing with us since she’s improved so much,” Senior Ella Broms said.
On Nov. 26, at the Redondo Beach tournament, Broms tore her ACL in the first minute of the game which put her out for the rest of the season. With Broms unable to play anymore, the team is left with six players.
“Only having six players is kind of a big issue moving forward, because, you know, every time we step on the court, there’s a risk that someone could get injured and we would be left with only five players,” Broms said.
OPHS girls basketball is getting used to their smaller team and is now better prepared for their games.
“My team is very well conditioned. They built up endurance, so it’s easier for them to push through it,” Broms said.
Despite having a smaller team, the OPHS girls basketball team continues to push their hardest and won their Jan. 15 game to Simi Valley, beating them by 37 points. Go support the OPHS girls basketball team on Jan. 21.
