With spring quickly approaching, our lives will soon be filled with blooming flowers, pollinating bees and warm, sunny weather. How we dress usually reflects the current season, so, let’s take a look at the fashion trends that we should (hopefully) start to see more of in the next few months.
Of course, everyone should dress in what makes them comfortable and confident. These are simply some trends that will truly encapsulate the springtime, and I’m excited to see them given their moment this season.
Let’s start off with brighter, bolder colors. During winter, it is so common for people to throw on a gray or black sweatsuit and call it a day. While this keeps them safe from the cold weather, it drains all life out of fashion. I propose adding a small pop of color to every outfit. If not the actual clothing pieces themselves, then pull in some vibrance with accessories. A brightly colored hat, some dangly earrings or even a statement belt can go a long way.
Not only will dressing in these colors make you look better, but studies show that it can improve your overall mood and mindset. In an article by Mental Health America, they explained that “Bright, warm colors stimulate energy and happiness.” Additionally, “through exposure to bright, cheery colors during dark winter months, a person may feel more warmth.” How you feel can be changed by how you dress.
Another trend I’m ready to start seeing is maxi and midi skirts, especially ones with floral patterns. Long skirts are such a convenient piece of apparel for springtime as they allow your legs to breathe in the warm weather. However, their flowy nature is not the only appeal. Skirts can bring an effortless sense of elegance to any outfit, and being put together on the outside can help your mental state feel put together as well.
Nowadays it is acceptable to leave the house wearing pajama pants and whatever baggy top is readily available. While comfort is an important factor in how we dress, sleepwear and being in public should for the most part stay separate. If an individual does not change out of the clothes they were wearing, and then slept in the previous night, it becomes difficult to start fresh with their day.
“Personally I do not wear pajamas to school,” senior OPHS student Addie VandenHengel said. “I think, for me at least, there needs to be a separation between relaxing and working. Getting dressed and ready each morning is how I get into my working mindset, and pajamas would just do the opposite.”
Furthermore, I am so ready to see a more unique shoe game this spring. While I have nothing against Uggs and Birkenstocks, I am looking for more. From brightly colored sambas and sneakers to stylish leather boots, your shoe choice can make or break an outfit. Sneakers especially have been growing in popularity, and it’s not only because of their flashy appearance. Studies done at USC have shown that sneakers have tangible benefits for some who wear them.
“For those who suffer from a variety of foot problems, orthopedic shoes, and more specifically sneakers, allow them to regain their mobility and live a more active lifestyle,” said an article by USC’s Illumin Magazine.
Fashion today doesn’t have to be all about looks. It factors in several aspects such as convenience, comfort and orthopedic well-being, in addition to looking stylish of course. Regardless of whether I see these trends, I am excited to see how everyone around me embraces their own style in the coming season. Spring is a time of renewal, so why don’t we all reflect that in our wardrobe as well!
