Jazz, Mixed and Treble choirs took to the Pavilion stage on Jan. 30 for the Choir Variety Show. This annual event proved itself anything but repetitive, every singer adding an entertaining twist to the night. Their performances included singles, duets and barbershop groups featuring everything from the ‘popular’ Wicked soundtrack to the tried and true ‘Hallelujah.’
In contrast to other choir shows this Variety Show was commentated by senior Ava Winkle and junior Elena McFadden. They introduced each song and set the tone for an incredible night.
“Emceeing was really fun because Ava and I got to write the script and come up with lots of silly puns to introduce the songs,” Mcfadden wrote to the Talon. “It was also really cool to see the audience’s reactions to the whole performance and feel the energy before and after every song.”
Another difference in this variety show was the amount of choreography. Many groups and soloists added movements to their songs, which added a layer of playfulness. One of these groups was the Greatest Show Ladies barbershop group. Sophomore Sophia Perez looks back on her group’s performance with pride and excitement.
“We started strong with some powerful solos, and I think we held our own throughout the show,” Perez said. “Being on stage can be nerve-wracking, but I’m glad we put on a great performance for everyone.”
All three choirs will be back on stage for the Music Fest on Mar. 23. Check out the Oak Park High School Instagram @oakparkchoir and the school calendar to learn more.
