After a successful 2024-2025 season, the girls flag football team is looking forward to another great year ahead. With a new coach, they are working to improve and diversify their strategy.
“One notable change from last season to this season is the shift from our old coach, Coach Alikian to our new one, Coach Preston,” sophomore Claire Murray wrote to the Talon. “Coach Preston is introducing a completely unique offensive and defensive style, including new plays and routes that are much different than last year.”
Although their first game was Aug. 12 at Saugus High School, where they won 19-6, the work to prepare began well before school started.
“Summer conditioning went well, a lot of the time was spent on various drills such as catching, footwork and sprints,” Murray wrote. “Personally, I’m trying to focus on improving my speed and agility for the new season.”
Since many of the team’s players are returning from last year, their spirit of camaraderie is stronger than ever.
“I’m really excited because I get to be on the team with the same people and now that we know each other better, it’s easier to do teamwork,” junior Kaileen Chang said. The quarterbacks know how the receivers run, their routes and stuff like that. It’s easier to work as a team knowing how everyone functions.”
With this level of familiarity, the team is able to focus on forming more complex plays.
“This season, we’re hoping that we can implement more trick plays,” Chang said. “Since everybody has more experience, we can really work on more of our fine-tuned skills.”
For current seniors, making memories is as much a priority as winning.
“I want to focus on having fun with my friends and enjoying myself during my senior year,” senior Bella Jauregui said. “Summer conditioning went really well, so I’m looking forward to a fun season with my teammates.”
The girls flag football team competes in games twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Come support the girls at their next home game on Aug. 19 against Westlake.
