The goal of a school is inherently to be a safe space for every student, no matter the situation. Sophomore club president Claire Kim lives by this mission, which is why she founded the club Dedications For Difference, a club focused on providing support and opportunities to connect with students with disabilities. DFD hosts monthly meetings on Wednesdays in room H12.
“The club is essentially about raising awareness and funds for people with special needs,” Kim said. “It’s so important to spread this awareness because generally, I don’t see people talking about people with disabilities.”
Kim has a personal attachment to DFD’s core mission.
“I’m doing this because my sister has a disability, and I’ve seen the lack of support that she gets throughout her life and school,” Kim said. “There’s been a lot of people who have been unwilling to support her, so I just want to make a safe space for that and provide some initiative.”
With their first meeting on Oct. 15, 2025, the DFD board already has a variety of plans ready to meet this goal.
“We’re going to be doing a lot of fun fundraisers, like baking and arts-and-crafts related activities,” club sophomore secretary Sandra He said. “Even just holding meetings where we tell people about what it is and spread understanding is so important, and can make such a difference.”
Additionally, volunteering will be a key aspect of membership in the club.
“We’re planning on volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse, where people can support individuals with Down Syndrome through teaching and just helping out generally,” He said. “We’re going to strongly encourage all of DFD’s members to help out with that and other volunteering we’ll do.”
As the club continues to grow, its impact aims to reach far beyond our campus alone.
“Every student deserves to get the best education possible, no matter the situation,” Kim said. “Dedication For Difference isn’t only a safe haven for those with disabilities, but a supportive community for people to learn and grow together.”
