Gal Joseph Yelinek’s role in the fall musical represents a greater idea of time and its limitations. He was immediately drawn to his character, Alfred, and the opportunity to break out of his stereotypical comic relief roles has helped him become a better actor.

“I got Alfred and I was really happy about [it],” Yelinek said. “[I enjoyed] being able to explore a newer type of character that I could do.”

Time is precious, and for Yelinek, being able to manage your time properly is very important, which is similar to what his character believes.

“Something I realized this year especially was that there are things you can and can’t do,” Yelinek said. “You won’t be able to do everything. Time is limited. Time you have with people, time you have for yourself. I think I connect to Alfred in that sense. He knows what he can’t do.”

While Yelinek enjoys doing a fall musical, he recognizes how impactful the switch from a play to musical is.

“I do share a lot of similar ideas with others in theater,” Yelinek said. “The fall play gives more opportunities for people who aren’t as vocally inclined or dance focused.”

Yelinek began his theatrical journey when his mom suggested that he participate in the musical “Singing in the Rain.” Since then, he has begun to take theater more seriously, taking part in both choir and theater.

“I realized, ‘Wow this [show] is really fun’ and I found some of my closest friends there,” Yelinek said.

Although Yelinek has found community and an outlet for creative expression in theater, he does not plan to pursue it in college as he would rather pursue a career in the medical field.

“I find medicine fascinating,” Yelinek said. “I find being able to help others special.”
