Keeping the show on track: Kylie Vo, Stage Manager
Ever since junior Kylie Vo was a kid, she has loved building things. Cardboard structures, artistic projects and anything she could put together to make structures. So when she joined theater, she naturally gravitated to the set team. Since then, Vo has worked her way up from mic wrangler, to set lead, and then Stage Manager.
As Stage Manager, Vo has many responsibilities in the production. She spends the early weeks of production focused on building and designing the set, and once tech week begins, she shifts to running mics and sound.
“Learning how to do every job in the pavilion was really fun,” Vo said. “But it is hard having to do a lot of tasks and being stretched thin.”
Vo finds herself being one of the last people to leave rehearsal, which can cause a huge time strain on her other extracurriculars and schoolwork. Nevertheless, Vo finds being stage manager is rewarding and the perfect fit for her.
“I love being Stage Manager because I feel like I have input on many decisions,” Vo said. “I like ensuring that things go well.”
Through Vo’s theatre experience, she has adapted to solving problems quickly and keeping the show moving.
“I’ve never done a show where thousands of things haven’t gone wrong,” Vo said. “I am typically running around fixing everything.”
Despite the challenges, Vo remains confident in what she does. She knows the Pavilion well and trusts her ability to solve problems as they come up. The work can be tiring and time-consuming, but Vo takes pride in that. v
