As Prop Lead and Running Crew Lead, Junior Carmel Chen plays a pivotal role in the production. Chen manages the curation of props for the actors, organizes where each prop is placed for scenes and coordinates which team member moves certain set pieces.

“The process always changes,” Chen said. “I am constantly making adjustments and communicating with my team members.”

Starting in August, Chen’s team has been carefully selecting, ordering and customizing the props for the actors. In October, Chen and her running crew members started practicing their cues backstage.

“Our work, along with the actors, is what makes theatre magic possible,” Chen said.

However, working backstage comes with significant challenges. The most challenging facet of preparing for the show is adhering to adjustments.

“Changes are constantly made to fine tune the vision of the show,” Chen said. “The directors and stage manager communicate with the design leads, and we adjust accordingly in order to make the show the best it can be.”

Chen finds the workload to sometimes be daunting, especially because of their workload from other classes and other extracurriculars.

While Chen’s job can be demanding, she loves the role because it allows her to be an essential part of the show’s magic. Everyday, she gains new leadership and problem-solving skills.

Chen also enjoys collaborating with her team members.

“Each member has their strengths and weaknesses,” Chen said. “We all benefit from working with one another.”

Chen’s dedication and creativity ensures that every prop, cue and scene runs smoothly, making her and her team an indispensable part of the production.
