Boys’ tennis team places first in league

Varsity tennis team to compete in CIF play-offs later this spring

Seniors Jack Berner, Vincent Tran, Kevin Ha (not pictured) and junior Bobby Yang practice against each other in a doubles match. With a 5-1 record, the boys’ varsity team placed first in the Coastal Canyon League (Jaron Flynn/Talon).

“Winning the tiebreaker in the final doubles round against Simi was my favorite moment so far,” senior and doubles player Kevin Ha said. “That set gave my partner, [sophomore] Justin Zilberstein, and I our third win of the day coming out of a lost tiebreaker the day before.”

Ha attributed the team’s success to Coach Carl Joyce.

“My favorite part about Coach Carl is his genuine kindness. He always has a smile with whoever he talks to,” Ha said. “I don’t think there’s ever been a time that I’ve seen him blow up on a player. He is a composed coach and I really admire that about him.”

Five new members were added to the team this year. With new partnerships and personalities, the team has taken on a new dynamic.

“[The team] is amazingly friendly. We joke around a lot, but we all work really hard and bring out the best in one another,” senior and doubles player Thomas Qin said.

Senior David Goulak has committed to play Division I tennis at UC Davis this fall.

“[We] are so proud of David. His nickname on the team is Chernobyl because he is so powerful,” junior and doubles player Will Carter said. “He is such a dedicated kid and it’s been an honor to get to play with him.”

Goulak is looking forward to competing in the CIF play-offs.

“CIF will be tough, but this is probably the best team that I have been on. I feel like we can go deep,” Goulak said.
