Friday: spirit week and North Korea’s fifth nuclear test
Happy Friday, Oak Park. Here’s what you need to know to wrap up your week and begin your weekend:
This week: volleyball and football
The girls’ volleyball team lost both games this week against Ventura Sept. 6 and Agoura Sept. 8. They will play in the San Luis Obispo Tournament today, Sept. 9, through tomorrow, Sept. 10.
Junior varsity football beat El Segundo 34-6 Thursday, Sept. 8. Varsity football will play a home game against El Segundo at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9.
Girls’ golf lost to Calabasas and Chaminade this week with a score of 271, while Calabasas had 291 and Chaminade 331.
Next week: spirit week and homecoming
Next week is spirit week. The themes for each day are: USA on Monday, frat/sorority on Tuesday, denim gods on Wednesday, Olympic athletes on Thursday and class colors on Friday. The first rally of the year is next Friday, Sept. 16.
The homecoming football game will be against West Adams Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. The homecoming dance is next Saturday Sept. 17 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The theme is “a night in Athens.” Tickets are on sale at the student store for $35 with ASB card and $40 without ASB card.
Beyond Oak Park: North Korea conducts fifth nuclear test
North Korea conducted a fifth nuclear test and released statements today that it can build warheads small enough to fit onto a missile. “This is our response to hostile powers, including the United States,” North Korean newsreader Ri Chun Hee said on state television. “We are sending out a message that if the enemies attack us, we can counterattack.” Read more from the Washington Post.

- Former president Bill Clinton defended himself and his foundation in a series of swing-state appearances this week. “I got tickled the other day when [Donald Trump] called my foundation a criminal enterprise,” Clinton said. “If creating jobs and saving lives is bad, I guess you can zing me with it.” Read more from the New York Times.
- On the “Ellen” show, Katy Perry met with Tony Marrero, a survivor from the Orlando nightclub shooting in June. Marrero lost his boyfriend and was shot four times. He said he listened to Perry’s songs during his recovery period. An aspiring movie director, Marrero received a present from Perry when she told him she would personally pay for his first year at film school. Read more from Today.
