Space Force: an effective use of America’s resources

Lightsabers, Chewbacca’s and BB-8’s not included

Attention space enthusiasts: your dreams about a bunch of guys in retro space suits, fighting with their glowing lightsabers to defend Earth from foreign invasion, may just come true! Or maybe not. Unfortunately, you’ll be extremely disappointed when you find out that Space Force doesn’t entail anything mentioned above. In fact, it’s not nearly as extravagant as many cinematic movies portray it to be.

Despite the fact that Space Force sounds like something straight out of “Star Wars” or some other high-ranking sci-fi movie franchise, this title would encapsulate a separate military branch that would handle anything to do with space warfare. And what exactly would they fight? Aliens? Well, as cool as that sounds, the answer is no, they would not.

But, hey, Space Force may actually be a good idea. Let me start by saying that there are various positive outcomes to creating a space force.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are 6.2 million Americans out of work. If 6.2 million Americans are currently jobless, then they could benefit from the creation of a new workforce, A.K.A a Space Force. Yes, it would take some time and training, both of which are resources that cannot and should not be squandered. But, if this project is successful,  those resources wouldn’t have been squandered, they would have been utilized properly to create a great outcome.

There are several other benefits that can be gained by building Space Force such as advancing the aerospace industry in states like California, reducing threats of nuclear missiles and, overall, strengthening national security.

According to the Organization For Economic Cooperation and Development and the Journalist’s Resource, countries like China and Russia are advancing their technology at an increasingly alarming rate, and the United States is gradually falling behind them. At first glance, it appears that a Space Force is simply a politicized tactic to display American superiority over other countries.

Yes, America does not want to be surpassed by other countries, but that is not the only reason driving this venture. Recent reports by the Federation of American Scientist claim to have found photos of a Russian satellite that has created nuclear bunkers on its parameters. Russia is posing a threat to America’s satellite security, which in the long run will inevitably affect you if Russia decided to use their satellites to intercept, or jam, U.S. communications.

No one wishes to live in fear, and your security would be put at risk when there are potential threats of nuclear missile attacks by hostile countries.

Admittedly, this project would need billions of dollars to simply start it, money our country does not have right now. Not only that, it would also require a lot of time. Both of these are incredibly vital resources.

All that money could potentially go to communities that lack a proper educational system. As for time, it can be spent finding cures for diseases or thinking of ways to help those in crippling poverty. Some of these ideas even appear more logical than that of an army in outer space. It really makes you wonder, is a Space Force even worth it?

Fact of the matter is, we have 6.2 million jobless Americans. I say, getting those people a way to support themselves and their family members should be one of our biggest priorities.

Sure, it may take years for this project to be put into place, but I’m sure that President Trump is going to fight extremely hard to get what he wants. As noted by his constant attempts to build a wall and have Mexico pay for it.

And who knows, this could potentially be of incredible importance in the near future. It could show Americans what we are capable of creating for our own benefit. The creation of Space Force could open the gates to a new wave of technology.

Truth is, Trump has already made up his mind and all we can do now is hope for a good outcome.

So if I managed to convince you that Space Force is a good idea, great! If not, in the words of Darth Vader,  “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
