Athena Trewyn has been on the volleyball team for four years, playing as a middle blocker. Volleyball has always been an extremely important part of her life.
“It felt so emotional knowing this was my last season. I’ve played with some of these girls for years, and realizing we won’t all be on the same court again honestly broke my heart a little,” Trewyn said.
Even though this senior class is comparatively small compared to other grades on the team, Trewyn’s impact is momentous.
“I hope people remember this senior class for our heart and energy. We gave everything we had and left it all on the court,” Trewyn said. “I brought laughter and energy to the team and I brought ‘griddying.’ I was known for always doing the griddy when I got a point or on the sideline whenever someone gets a kill.”
Their volleyball game Nov. 1 in Ventura was especially challenging.
“Losing against Ventura in our CIF semifinals match really stuck with me,” Trewyn said. “It was a tough loss because it was our last real game together before state, and it hit me that this chapter was coming to a close.”
But that wasn’t the only game that left a lasting impact on Trewyn.
“Another memory that really stuck with me is our first ever game against Louisville,” Trewyn said. “It was my first game playing with my teammates, and that game blew everyone’s minds. Louisville is a really good team offensively and defensively, but we won that game mostly based on our energy. We had great plays, our offense and defense were on point, but we really stood out with our energy. It really showed how much closer we all got in that game.”
Games weren’t the only important parts of volleyball, every moment meant a lot. As a senior, Trewyn treasured every moment on the volleyball team and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
“I’d tell my freshman self to soak it all in: every practice, every game, every laugh,” Trewyn said. “It goes by faster than you think. I would also say take better care of yourself and to workout because you want to get stronger every chance you can.”
