Former President Obama and other prominent figures to address Class of 2020

YouTube Originals to stream “Dear Class of 2020”

Senior Lincoln Debenham of Los Angeles’s Eagle Rock High School tweeted former President Barack Obama requesting him to deliver a speech to the class of 2020 who has lost their senior activities and traditional graduation due to the pandemic.

“Like most high school/college seniors, I’m saddened by the loss of milestone events, prom & graduation,” Debenham tweeted to Barack Obama. “In an unprecedented time, it would give us great comfort to hear your voice. We ask you to consider giving a national commencement speech to the class of 2020.”

Debenham’s wish was soon granted. YouTube Originals is planning to stream “Dear Class of 2020” where Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, BTS, Lady Gaga, former Secretary of Defense Robert Michael Gates, Chief Executive Officer of Alphabet Sundar Pichai, former United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and activist Malala Yousafzai will all deliver commencement speeches.

Both Michelle and Barack Obama have taken to social media to spread the word: “Whether you’re graduating from high school, college, or any other kind of school –– we want you, your family, and all of your loved ones to be a part of this celebration. Tune in @Youtube on June 6 at http://yt.be/classof2020. Can’t wait to see you there,” Michelle Obama tweeted.

In response to a question of how seniors feel about Obama speaking to the class of 2020 on Instagram, Oak Park High School seniors responded with “iconic,” and “so excited.”

“I think [the commencement] is great! I love seeing the effort from influential people to address the seniors’ loss this year. I feel as though we have been robbed of so many memories and closure, yet no one seems to be talking about it,” senior Eden Eliahou said. “Having a mixture of pop culture, business executives and politician speakers appeal to most seniors in an exciting way, and I am personally looking forward to the commencement.”

Others wish these prominent figures would play a bigger role in the current situation.

“I think it’s very meaningful that the way we seniors were affected in this pandemic is recognized, especially by such big names like a former president,” senior Bob Emrich said. “But in the long-run, there [are] such bigger issues that somebody like Obama or a group as well known as BTS could be helping with — whether that’s through financial donations or spreading awareness.”
