Oak Park High School’s fluffiest visitor
A sheepadoodle named Ranger offered comfort as a therapy dog on Thursday, April 16 to students attending the Wellness Fair – organized by the Advanced Peer Counseling class. Ranger had an entire station dedicated to him and his owner, Nilly Cobaugh Smith, who visited as a part of the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
Students surrounded Smith’s station, showing their appreciation for the furry sheepadoodle.
“He’s so fluffy,” said sophomore Kaia Ghalimi.
“His head is so soft,” said freshman Aric Esmail.
Ranger, now 4 years old after his birthday on Friday, April 17, served as a certified therapy dog for half his life.
“At just four months old, Ranger began puppy training, and from there continued on to obedience work and advanced training,” said Smith.
After years of training, Ranger’s routine consists of visiting and helping different people throughout the community.
“Ranger and I visit hospitals, senior assisted living homes, and take part in events,” said Smith. “We are also proud to be involved with the military animal project, which has been especially meaningful to us.”
Smith says that she has one simple goal:
“To bring comfort, connection, and a little bit of joy to people through the presence of dogs,” said Smith. “Seeing the happiness he brings to others is what makes this work so rewarding for me.”
