The Sandy Fire continues to impact Oak Park High School students and families living across Ventura County as firefighters work to contain the fast-moving wildfire. The fire began the morning of Monday, May 18 at around 10:15 AM, near Sandy Avenue and spread quickly because of dry vegetation, hot temperatures and strong winds. According to CAL FIRE, evacuation warnings and mandatory evacuation orders remain in effect for multiple nearby areas.
For many OPHS students and families, the fire has created uncertainty as smoke continues affecting air quality and evacuation zones remain active nearby. Students living close to affected areas are being encouraged to stay alert and regularly check official emergency updates from Ventura County, CAL FIRE and local law enforcement.
Officials recommend that students and families prepare emergency bags with important items including medications, chargers, clothing, water, food and important documents in case evacuation orders expand. Residents should also avoid unnecessary travel near evacuation zones and be prepared to leave immediately if conditions worsen.
Because smoke from the fire continues to spread through surrounding communities, health officials advise students to limit outdoor activity when air quality is poor. Students participating in sports or outdoor activities should follow school guidance and take precautions such as wearing masks outdoors and staying indoors when possible.
Students who are feeling stressed or overwhelmed by the ongoing fire conditions can also access support through OPHS counselors, teachers, district updates and local community resources such as the Watch Duty App as the situation continues developing.
As of Wednesday, May 20, the Sandy Fire remains at 5% contained but it is still important to continue to be cautious and watchful at all times.
