After an undefeated season last year, the Oak Park High School girls golf team starts their new season this week. The girls golf team had their first tournament of the season last Tuesday, Aug. 23, resulting in a victory to kickoff their season. The team looks forward to many more matches throughout the season that hopefully result in victories, as has been seen in previous years.

“I hope they [the players] have a great time, they expect to win every match as we have not lost a match this decade,” said Head Coach Donn James.

To uphold this record, the girls golf team constantly prepares for their upcoming matches and tournaments.

“We practice generally from 4 p.m. to 5:30 or 6 p.m.,” said James.

James urges his players to focus on and appreciate what they have in the present, as each match and season differs in its own unique way.

“What I tell them all [the players] at the beginning of the season is to look around because this time next year it won’t be the same so enjoy it and take pleasure in the season and CIF,” said James.

The team is a very skilled group of girls, and they get along very well.

“We have been blessed the last few years with just a multitude of talent and again this year,” said James.

Leading into this season, the team has high hopes for what they can accomplish. The team members cooperate well together and cheer each other on.

“All of us are passionate about improving and we always encourage one another, both on and off the course. We are all really close together. We’re a small team with only 13 girls, but we have fun together. I wouldn’t have it any other way. This season we are here to win and make it through to both CIF team and individual,” senior captain Derica Chiu wrote to the Talon.
