The Oak Park boys’ football season began last Friday. With the school year back in full swing, fall sports make an entrance into the year with football being the most popular in terms of attendance.
Not only are the players and coaches anticipating for the season, so are the parents and the students. Head coach Casey Webb has been working on some major improvements over the summer.
When discussing real game scenarios, “we’re trying to focus on getting guys reps. We graduated a lot of senior starters last year,” Webb said. “so we have a completely new set of guys that are getting used to varsity football.”
Despite the significant number of players who graduated the expectations for the team are high after their impressive playoff run last year.
“My hopes are that we can put a team out there that is competitive,” Webb said. “And you know that we get better every week.”
Senior and team captain Luke Knight expressed his view going into his last year.
“I just want to be remembered as someone who was always there for the team no matter what,” said Knight.
“Week Zero” occurred last week against the Buena Bulldogs. The score was 27-14 in a decisive victory to the OP Eagles. Junior Nico Mastrippolito put up an impressive statline with Eight receptions, 187 yards and a touchdown.
The next home game is on Sep. 8 against the Brentwood Eagles.
