The popular Chinese tile game Mahjong is played by millions of people worldwide. A game similar to poker in terms of strategy and luck, this activity is often ignored in light of its complex nature.
This year, sophomore Nina Xu founded the Mahjong club to teach students of all skill levels how to play the game.
“My main goal in founding this club was to create a space where students who play Mahjong can meet and play together,” Xu said. “Mahjong is a community game that you can play with a bunch of people while discussing your interests and hobbies.”
Students of all skill levels are able to learn and play the game. More experienced players are there to aid in learning and playing the game, treasurer Anny Sun is one of these individuals.
“As of right now, a lot of people don’t know how to play Mahjong yet,” Sun said. “We’re in the process of explaining the game and teaching them how to play. The people who already know how to play are there to help and answer questions.”
In the future, the Mahjong Club is planning to give back to the community.
“We’re working towards getting working with an organization where we can go to senior homes and teach them how to play Mahjong,” Board Member Grace Popham said. “That way we can build community both at those senior homes and with high school students.”
For those looking to expand their strategic skills, Mahjong might be a great pursuit. The Mahjong Club meets Mondays at lunch in H-3.
“Players of all levels are welcome and we’ll be sure to teach you,” Xu said.
