The Girls’ golf team celebrates a win for their first league game against Royal High School on Thursday, Sept. 3 (Surica Segal/Talon).

Last year, the Oak Park girls’ golf team placed second in the Coastal Canyon League with an impressive record of 10-2.

This season, the girls’ golf team is determined to defeat Simi Valley, the former League Champion, in the upcoming match on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The team expands its roster from seven to 11 under the guidance of head varsity coach Donn James, who has been the assistant coach for boys’ golf since 2001.

“Though still young, we have a roster of now veteran players who enjoy the team and the competitive nature of golf,” James said.

Girls’ golf, which was introduced to Oak Park last year, has several outstanding players.

“I want to play for Stanford or UCLA. I am hoping to play professionally,” sophomore Jewel Jorgensen said. “I practice six hours a day. I go to Oak Park Independent School so I can practice during the day.”

Junior Georgia Shevitt, ranked as the top player in the league, also describes herself as incredibly committed to girls’ golf.

“I practice a lot everyday and always have a positive attitude,” Shevitt said.

Junior Regan Finch contributes to the Eagles’ team despite her recent foot injury.

“Last year I played with a broken growth plate and a boot so I didn’t let my team down,” Finch said. “We had worked so hard and I was determined to win league with my team.”

James, who hopes for the team to win the league title, is optimistic.

“We’re looking forward to a great season,” James said.
