Jet Lag: The Game is a rapidly growing, travel-based Youtube channel. It is known for its complex, well-thought out game design that the crew participates in across the globe. The game is like a lower budget version of “The Amazing Race,” but with way more personality. In one season, the crew attempted to circumnavigate the globe within 72 hours. In another, they adapted the game “Risk” across the territories of Australia.
Before I explain how excellent this show is, you need to understand that I am putting you onto something niche. This show is still relatively unknown, which is unbelievable considering the quality of their production. However, I don’t want to keep this from the masses, because I feel that this show has the ability to genuinely improve the lives of anyone who watches it.
The members of the crew are Sam Denby, Adam Chase and Ben Doyle, and these guys have personalities that are easy to get attached to. Occasionally, they are joined by a guest when the game requires two pairs. In their newest season, they took the game to the United Kingdom to play Hide and Seek Across the U.K.
The cinematography in this season was breathtaking. What makes it so impressive is that everything is filmed on their iPhones, yet they still manage to curate unique and intimate visual storytelling. In my opinion, the choice to use phones adds to its magic. It makes you as the viewer feel like you are a traveler along for the adventure.
Another technique that they consistently nail is their editing. In 2023, they were nominated for best editing at the Streamy Awards, and they’ve only gotten better since then. This season was filled with its recognizable choppy editing style between the players’ points of views. It is very rewarding to listen to the players spouting theories about where the hider may be, and then cutting to the hider essentially confirming or rejecting their theory with the information they give the audience.
This season of the show definitely had a lot of tense moments, especially in its last episode. However, my only major critique is that it felt pretty slow for a portion of the show in the middle. Since each episode was released weekly, it was disappointing to have to wait an extra week for more action. Fortunately, when the moments were nerve-wracking, they were extremely nerve-wracking. The winner was decided by a matter of minutes in the last episode.
Ultimately, I really enjoyed watching this season (as usual). I urge everyone to take a chance on this show; it may change your life. It will introduce you to new places, stimulate your brain and bring you joy that you never knew to be out there.
