Monday: fall sports and Libya regains Sirte

Happy Monday, Oak Park. Here’s what you need to know to wrap up your weekend and begin your week:

Last week: Boys’ basketball first win at home

The varsity boys’ basketball had a home game against Gahr on Friday, Dec. 2, and they won 82-57.

On Friday, Dec. 2 boys’ varsity soccer played Thousand Oaks away and lost 4-2.

Girls’ soccer lost 2-1 against Saugus on Friday, Dec. 2.

This week: winter sports continue

Girls’ soccer will play Santa Paula at home Tuesday, Dec. 6. Frosh/soph will play at 3:30 p.m., junior varsity will play at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6:45 p.m.

Boys’ soccer will play an away game at Santa Paula Wednesday, Dec. 7. Frosh/soph plays at 3:30 p.m., junior varsity at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6:45 p.m.

Junior varsity and varsity also have games at home Friday, Dec. 9 against Malibu. Junior varsity will play at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6:45 p.m.

Boys’ basketball will play in the Sierra Canyon Tournament Monday, Dec. 5 to Saturday, Dec. 10.

Girls’ basketball will play an away game against La Reina Monday, Dec. 5. Junior varsity plays at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.

Girls’ soccer has an away game on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at Thousand Oaks. Frosh-soph will play at 3
p.m., junior varsity at 4:15 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m. They have another game on Friday, Dec. 16 at home against Calabasas. Frosh-soph will play at 3:30 p.m., junior varsity at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6:30 p.m.

Next week: girls’ and boys’ soccer and basketball

Boys’ basketball has an away game against Agoura on Monday, Dec. 12. Frosh-soph will play at 4 p.m., junior varsity at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.

Girls’ basketball has a home game against Westlake on Monday, Dec. 12. Junior varsity will play at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6:30 p.m. They have an away game on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Viewpoint. Junior varsity will not play, and varsity will play at 5 p.m.

On Monday, Dec. 12 boys’ soccer has an away game against Chaminade. Frosh-soph will play at 6 p.m., junior varsity at 3:30 p.m. and varsity at 5 p.m. They will also play Calabasas away on Friday, Dec. 16. Frosh-soph will play at 3 p.m., junior varsity at 4:30 p.m. and varsity at 6:15 p.m.

Beyond Oak Park: Standing Rock Sioux Tribe victorious in Dakota Access oil pipeline protests

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe succeeded in its longstanding protests to block the Dakota Access pipeline from being built near its reservation yesterday, Dec. 4. The Department of the Army announced that it would not allow the $3.7 billion pipeline to be drilled under a dammed section of the Missouri River, and would instead look for alternative routes.   • Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson accepted Donald Trump’s nomination to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development today, Dec. 5. Previously opposed to Trump’s presidency due to his lack of government experience, Carson has since become a close adviser to Trump. Read more from Reuters.
  • The Libyan national unity government has gained full control of Sirte, Libya after months of fighting over the coastal ISIL stronghold. The announcement was made today, Dec. 5.
