Senior Georgia Shevitt, the captain of the Oak Park golf team, has been named the team’s Most Valuable Player for three consecutive years. She finished second in the Coastal Canyon League, almost making it to CIF Finals.

Shevitt has played golf for 10 years, starting at the age of 8. In playing golf for so long, Shevitt said, she has developed perseverance and commitment.

“Golf is something that … has made me someone who, if [I] start something, [I] finish it. I think the way to accomplish things is by committing yourself to whatever you feel is important and it will pay off,” Shevitt said.

Shevitt said that her previous coaches helped her become who she is today in many ways.

“I have been with three different coaches throughout my time golfing, and all of them have contributed to where I am today. Whether it changes the way I think of things, or the way I physically prepare in golf, they did it all. Not only that, but many of my teammates have made golf something I wouldn’t have traded for anything,” Shevitt said.

Shevitt said she felt that the team atmosphere played a big role in being on the golf team.

“I loved having a team that was so crazy, and there was never a dull moment,” Shevitt said. “We were always the loudest group anywhere we went and the moments we had were endless. I met some really great people throughout my four years, and I wouldn’t trade my team for anything.”

Junior Karisa Toy, Shevitt’s teammate, said that Georgia is a very devoted golfer.

“As I got to know her through the past three years, I have come to realize that she is without a doubt one of the most dedicated athletes I have met,” Toy said. “She doesn’t stress about the game and I always feel more relaxed when I get to play beside her. Georgia brings a strong sense of leadership to the team. I think everyone has a reason to look up to Georgia, whether it’s golf or personal.”

Shevitt said that, throughout her golf career, she has largely been able to set personal goals and achieve them.

“I think I have been blessed with many things throughout my years of golfing, but my accomplishments made me realize that the work I was doing paid off through my four years on the team,” Shevitt said. “I was able to make the boys’ golf team my freshman year and qualify for tournaments on my own. Not only that but also being able to lead my team as MVP and the captain has made my hard work worth something. I think the biggest things that I was able to accomplish during my golf career was through my own personal goals that I set out for myself.”

Toy said that next year will be challenging without Shevitt.

“I’ve never gone a season without Georgia, and next year is going to be rough without her presence. Not only does she bring her amazing game to the team, but she also has the ability to brighten the spirits of us,” Toy said. “She has always been able to put a smile on someone’s face.”
