OPHS takes on Simi Valley High School

Dual league meets are the biggest competitions of Oak Park High School’s track season. There, the 150-plus athletes that make up the team chase PRs and podium placing in pursuit of individual and team achievement. On Thursday, March 14, the Eagles competed against Simi Valley High School at their track.

Contending with a hot, dry headwind, the athletes sought to out-race and out-perform red jerseys across sprint, distance, jump, pole vault and throwing events. Any competition displays the highs and lows of athletics. Runners gave their events their all and celebrated one another’s victories. At any track meet, count on athletes cheering for their teammates from the starting gun to the finish line.

Often viewed as an individual sport, track does have a team component in its scoring. Every event won by an athlete scores five points, every second place scores three points and every third place scores one point. The results of any head-to-head meet are the compiled scores. Against SVHS, JV boys, varsity boys and varsity girls lost, though they were all by a small margin of points. The bright spot of the night was the JV girls, who were able to pull out a win.

The team’s upcoming schedule includes a home meet against Royal High School on April 10 following spring break, leading to invitationals and the postseason.
