After weekly games starting in September, girls’ varsity volleyball won the Coastal Canyon League Championship on Oct. 9. The team won three sets to one in a final match against Agoura High School, winning league for the third year running.

“To me winning league means that all the hard work we have put in has paid off and it’s kind of our little reward for playing our hearts out,” senior and co-captain Taylor Hunter wrote to the Talon.

The team tied for first place with Moorpark High School in the league with an 8-2 winning record this season. The team ranks 174th statewide.

“The championship game was exciting, nerve-racking and fun because we all came together,” Hunter wrote.

According to senior Grace Watkins, the championship game brought the team together and helped bring closure to the season.

“It was stressful at times, but we leaned on each other and put our everything out there,” Watkins wrote to the Talon. “I am so proud of this team for everything we accomplished this season. I couldn’t have asked for a better last season at Oak Park!”

Head coach Kendall Bilbruck said that winning was the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication.

“We have had a tough and pressed schedule this year from summer conditioning, to tournaments, preseason, season and all of our practices in between,” Bilbruck wrote to the Talon. “It has been hectic but the girls have done an amazing job at overcoming each obstacle that comes their way, so it’s extra special.”

Bilbruck worked as assistant coach for two years before moving on to take on the role of head coach this season.

Bilbruck wrote that she hopes winning league this year is a step toward many more victories in the future.

“We say this quote often that if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse,” Bilbruck wrote. “Each day, we are working to get better. Especially for the younger girls on our team, we want to make sure they are getting the opportunity to learn and improve that way they can set the standard and lead by example for the following years.”
