This is YOUR newspaper

If you can write, you can write for us

In a nation that is as politically divided as the United States, criticism towards the media has logically increased. News outlets are often criticized as leaning too far left or right, and some even openly declare their partisanship. We, as your school’s newspaper, don’t want to be a part of that.

We understand that the Talon is often thought of as a left-leaning publication, especially in terms of the opinion pieces published. We also understand that Oak Park, in particular Oak Park High School, is a place where left-leaning opinions are more socially acceptable.

But, frankly, we make an honest effort to express diverse opinions in the Talon. We cannot control the fact that most of our writers lean left, nor can we control what topics they wish to discuss. We are acutely aware of the mix of content that we publish.

At the end of the day, we can’t will right-leaning writers into existence. Those who choose to write for the Talon are free to express any opinions they would like, so long as their pieces are in keeping with our editorial policy, ed code and the law.

So, regardless of your political views and beliefs about the Talon, consider this an invitation to come write for us.

This is your newspaper as much as it is ours, and the only way for us to publish pieces that represent all beliefs is if they are written by the very people who hold them. And, if you’re worried about publicly expressing an opinion in an environment that disagrees with you, please remember that expressing your opinion publicly is the first step to normalizing it.

Furthermore, left and right aren’t the only options. One way that we are actively trying to increase the diversity of thought expressed in the Talon is by encouraging our writers to write about nonpartisan issues, like why there should be no speed limit, movies, college decisions, food wrappers and more

You can even write an EYE 2 EYE if you and a friend disagree. EYE 2 EYE pieces aim to illustrate issues with arguments from both sides, and strive to find common ground.

If you are interested in writing for the Talon, email the Talon at [email protected], come to club meetings during seventh period on Wednesdays (meet code: ophstalonclub) or simply let another staff member know.

We would love to have you write for us.
