When walking through the Oak Park High School campus, it’s easy to move quickly and miss friendly faces. But if you pay close attention you would meet one of the best people, Angus Rein. Angus has always been a consistent calming presence to all that know him.
“Around Oak Park, Angus Rein is the guy you hang out with if you want to laugh or talk about something completely random for hours,” senior Eden Chirchick said. “Angus has the skill of constantly being unintentionally (and occasionally intentionally) funny which makes him very fun to be with.”
Since transferring into the OPUSD his freshman year, Rein has built bonds with other students that have already paid off. From homecoming king to co-captain of the boys tennis team, Rein is a self-motivated individual, which is evident through his passion for tennis.
“I first got into tennis when my parents introduced me to it at eight-years-old, and joined a tennis team at nine where I met Josh Ma,” said Rein. “Since then we’ve known each other through competing in tournaments and practicing, it wasn’t till high school that we went to the same school, and now are senior captains together.”
As his skills have progressed, Rein has also competed in higher level competitions and received Most Valuable Player two seasons in a row.
“During my sophomore year Josh and I competed in the CIF-SS individuals as a doubles team, and got quite far reaching the top 32 doubles team in socal,” said Rein. “Last year I had some of my most memorable team matches, upsetting the number 1 seed of Division 1 in the quarterfinals in a tight 9-9 match vs Portola.”
His love for the sport has given him opportunities to play, as well as coach.
“Tennis has opened up some volunteering opportunities for me, such as ACEing Autism Oak Park led by Natalie Ng, which has allowed me to use tennis as a tool for bringing exercise, fun, and communication skills to those with autism,” said Rein. “It has been a fun and rewarding way to help out in the community.”
When asked about what advice Rein would give to younger athletes, his response was clear:
“This sport is challenging, you may want to quit several times, but if you can stick with it you may have some of the best memories in high school team tennis,” Rein said.
Although senior year is coming to a close, Rein fully intends to take his love for tennis into his future as well as pursuing engineering, airplanes and rocketry.
“I plan on majoring in aerospace or mechanical engineering, to continue my passions and hobbies,” said Rein. “I’ve just finished making a six foot tall In-N-Out themed rocket set to launch in early summer.”
